Why did we launch Uncommon Wine?

From its beginning millennia ago in the region now known as the Caucasus, the growing of grapes for winemaking has progressively spread to most regions of the world. From Europe to the Americas, Africa, and Asia, the culture of winemaking and wine drinking has become an integral part of human society.

Following in the footsteps of this "winemaking globalization," a few varieties of Vitis Vinifera, the main grapevine used to make wine, dominate the production of the most expensive and sought-after wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay come to mind first in this category. Additionally, these wines are made using the same techniques first developed in Bordeaux or Burgundy and then adapted to specific conditions, such as those found in California.

However, the goal of this site is to help you explore another facet of the Californian wine industry. Through its diversity of climate and terroirs, as well as being a melting pot of wine culture, California offers a wealth of wine diversity that makes it a unique and fascinating wine region.

We will rarely talk about Bordeaux blends, Pinots, or Chardonnays here. Instead, be ready to learn about the intricacies of lesser-known varietals such as Charbono, Chenin Blanc, Vermentino, Tannat, and many more.
