Vermentino

This Italian varietal, found in the vineyards of Tuscany and Sardignia, has been shown to be the same as Pigato from Liguria and Favorita grapevine from Piemonte.  It was introduced early in the vineyards of Corsica and has expanded considerably in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region where it is known as Rolle.  It is found in limited quantities in Australia.

Vermentino was mainly introduced to California by Tablas Creek vineyards that obtain cuttings from Chateau de Beaucastel. Central Coast is the main location for Vermentino plantings, but it can be also found in Lodi, Carneros and the Sierra Nevada.

Early budding and mid ripening and susceptible to spring frost.  Vermentino is otherwise pretty easy to grow in the vineyard and is a vigorous variety.

Known for its highly scented wine aromas of citrus, white flowers, with sometimes hints of saline minerality, Vermentino is a great companion to food. The palate is almost always dry and sometimes oily. I like to think of Vermentino as a blend of the best of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier flavors profiles.

The highest quality Vermentino wines in Sardinia come from the northeastern part of the island, in the appellation called Vermentino di Gallura DOCG where it produces some of the most aromatic and food friendly Italian white wines

  • Mediterranean Cuisine: Vermentino is a fantastic match for Mediterranean dishes. It pairs well with light and fresh dishes such as Greek salads, bruschetta, or grilled vegetables with herbs. It can also be enjoyed with dishes like pesto pasta, grilled chicken or seafood with lemon and herbs, or roasted Mediterranean vegetables.

  • Asian Cuisine: Vermentino's versatility allows it to complement certain Asian dishes. It pairs nicely with Thai or Vietnamese cuisine, particularly dishes with fresh herbs, citrus flavors, and lighter spiciness.

  • Seafood and Shellfish: Vermentino pairs exceptionally well with seafood and shellfish due to its bright acidity and citrus flavors. It complements grilled fish, shrimp, scallops, and oysters. You can also try it with dishes like seafood pasta, ceviche, or fish tacos.
